When we encounter something we don't understand, the governance temptation is to classify it. Sort it into a category, pull the matching playbook off the shelf. “It is THIS, so we deal with it like THAT.” That works for things that hold still long enough to be classified. Databases. Network protocols. Org charts.

So how do we deal with something we don't fully understand? The same way we deal with gravity. We observe what it does. We measure its effects. We build structures that work with its behavior rather than against it. And we continuously adjust our strategy based on what we observe.
This Is Reification
This is reification — the act of making the abstract concrete. We don't understand gravity. But we've reified it: F = Gm₁m₂/r². The equation is not gravity. It's a reification of gravity — a concrete, usable representation of observed behavior. And it works extraordinarily well.
Money works the same way. We don't fully understand “value” — it's subjective, contextual, culturally dependent. But we've reified it into currency: a concrete, transferable, measurable representation. Money isn't value. It's a reification of value. And it enables commerce at scale because everyone can work with the reification even when they disagree about the underlying reality.
This is the foundation of governance. When we encounter something we can't fully understand — gravity, value, intelligence — we reify its observable behaviors into concrete variables we can measure, track, and act on. We govern the reification, not the mystery.
